The 16th Judicial District Public Defender’s Office serves St. Martin, Iberia and St. Mary Parishes. We provide legal representation to eligible adults and juveniles in criminal matters and parents in child in need of care cases.
Our mission is to zealously defend the rights, liberties and dignity of our clients through high quality legal representation. We practice client-centered advocacy while adhering to performance standards, ethical excellence and data-driven practices. We support the integrity and fairness of the justice system with compassion for our clients and respect for all.
How to get a public defender
Eligible clients are referred to our office by the Court. All incarcerated clients are assessed by a Judge at first appearance. If you are out on bond, you can request a public defender at your next court date.
